For many years an 87G Carmarthen steed Baydon Manor switched allegiance to Llanelly in July 1962 where it remained until February 1965 having short stints at 88A Cardiff East Dock and 86E Severn Tunnel Junction prior to withdrawal in September of this same year. GWR 5700 CLASS 0-6-0PT No. 6772In between bouts of bright sunshine much of the 22nd March 1964 was a gloomy affair as can be seen in this photograph of a line-up of condemned GWR 5700 Class 0-6-0PT’s. Leading the charge is No. 6772 followed by Nos 6714, 6768, 6763 and 4654. All had been taken out of service between December 1963 and January 1964. GWR 7200 CLASS 2-8-2T No. 7252A busy seen taken from the steps of the coaling plant at 87A Neath on 22nd March 1964 where the camera has focused on GWR 7200 Class 2-8-2T No. 7252 newly transferred from 87B Duffryn Yard. At the forefront of the locomotives lined-up in the background are two visiting GWR 2800 Class 2-8-0’s from 86E Severn Tunnel Junction Nos. 2839 and 3801. Condemned in June 1965 No. 7252 was one of a batch of steam locomotives originally sold to Steel Supply, Briton Ferry, but were re-sold later to Cohen’s, Morriston, Swanses. Photograph – Peter Hands

The next ‘Port’ of call for these erstwhile Pannier Tanks would be to the scrapyard at Bird’s, Morriston, Swansea. GWR 4200 CLASS 2-8-0T No. 4243GWR 4200 Class 2-8-0T No. 4243 stands on a short dead-end road outside the roundhouse of its home depot at 88H Tondu on 22nd March 1964. Little had changed in terms of numbers of locos on view from my first visit to Tondu in July 1961 – 37 were noted that day. On the 22nd March 1964 numbers had declined to 24 – not a great deal of difference, but not for much longer. The depot closed to steam the following month and No. 4243 then had a ‘brief encounter’ at 86G Pontypool Road prior to withdrawal. Photograph – Peter Hands

GWR 5600 CLASS 0-6-2T No. 6628By the time the venue of 88E Abercynon had been reached in the afternoon of 22nd March 1964 the sun had broken through and bathed in sunlight alongside the straight running shed is locally based GWR 5600 Class 0-6-2T No. 6628. It was a delight to visit this well-maintained and clean little depot. Upon closure on 2nd November 1964 No. 6628 moved on to pastures new at 87A Neath. In the frame is Barry Homer, a life-long friend since we first met at Birmingham (Snow Hill) in the Spring of 1959 and shared many shed-bashing adventures up to the end of steam in August 1968 (see ‘Chasing Steam on Shed’). GWR CASTLE CLASS 4-6-0 No. 5054 EARL OF DUCIELooking uncared for externally in the yard at 88A Cardiff East Dock on 22nd March 1964 is GWR Castle Class 4-6-0 No. 5054 Earl of Ducie from 86C Hereford. One of the ‘chosen’ Castles to take part in the famous Ian Allan special from Paddington to Plymouth and return on 9th May 1964, Earl of Ducie was transferred to 85A Worcester and returned to pristine condition. It worked the Bristol (Temple Meads) to Paddington leg of the tour when it had been hoped it would reach 100mph but unfortunately failed in the attempt possibly because of the strong head-wind.
